In a time when festivals come and go more than porn stars it’s hard to make yours stand out during the saturated summer season. But Playgroup does so with aplomb, evolving from the raucous club night that encouraged fancy dress and face paint it’s now an intimate summer festival with more quirky character than an indie Mumblecore movie . The focus is on Alice in Wonderland-esque fun, where the surreal, the marvelous and the miscellaneous is prized above all else. This is the festival to meet new friends, get abducted by aliens and learn creepily hip new skills like how to preserve dead animals.

This year’s theme is lost toys so prepare for marauding robots, moth-eaten stuffed animals and all manner of comic book superheroes wandering wide eyed between art installations and huge sculptures as bikini clad Barbies and dog-tagged Action Men take part in the longest pun quiz ever. There’s an eclectic mix of live electronica, folk, funk and swing in the form of acts like Reso, Belleruche, High Rankin, Herbaliser and The Correspondents. So dust off that panda bear onesie, get the fake eyelashes out and start gluing your empty cereal boxes together, it’s time to get playful.
