Ones To Watch: 2013

Here at Spindle, we like to think we’ve not only got our fingers on the pulse but that we actually have the ability to see into the future. Because of our unprecedented ability to see such things, we’ve ditched the tired old ‘Best of 2012′ format and gone for Ones To Watch 2013 instead. Here are the team’s picks for the arts in the upcoming 12 months:

Heather Falconer, Editor-in-Chief

Book: The Second Coming by John Niven. I was a big fan of Kill Your Friends.

Film: Pedro Almodovar’s I’m So Excited.

Music and gigs: I’m with Charlie – totes want to see MIA! And Cinnamon Girl of course.

Festival: I really want to get to Flow festival in Helsinki this year – the lineup the last few years has been great!

Exhibition: Jurgan Teller.

Book: I’m going to be throwing myself into Philip Larkin’s biography.
I finally tracked it down earlier in the year and haven’t had a chance to
get stuck in yet.

Film: Die Hard 5 – February release date baby! I’ll be there in my wife
beater.

Music and gigs: Too many to list.

Festival: Bestival. Descending on the Isle of Wight in fancy dress is a much loved tradition.

Book: ‘Eyeless and Gazing’, by Jeremy Hanson-Finger. Jez is a Spindle pal and brilliant writer so his first book promises to be something special; also Ben Ladouceur’s debut poetry collection ‘Otter’ – because he’s a great poet and not just because there’s a poem about me in there.

Film: ‘August: Osange County’ with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts; Almodovar’s new one ‘I’m So Excited’; Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Great Gatsby’ and Chloe Grace Moretz as ‘Carrie’.

Music and gigs: Toronto up and comers Bravestation, DIANA and Barbara.

Festival: Osheaga, Montreal. This is, like, Canada’s only festival and it’s meant to be amazz.

Celebrity you’re most looking forward to fucking up in 2013: Maggie Smith.

Book: New ‘Bridget Jones’ by Helen Fielding – she’s only bloody back isn’t she!

Film: ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ – Epic prequel. James Franco and Mila Kunis, need I say more? Okay, how about Michelle Williams AND Rachel Weisz?

Music and gigs: The Weeknd – He’s just released his debut ‘Trilogy’. As he’s from Canada I’m sure Thomas is his BFF by now. Also looking forward to Purity Ring at St John Church, Hackney.

Fashion Designer: Seth Pratt – LA designer has just made the outfits for Brooke Candy’s latest video. She’s all over Dazed…

Artist: Chris Timms – Gif and blog artist – check out his blog for great examples of his work.

Exhibition: Light Shows at Hayward Gallery

Festival: Exit in Serbia. Cheap, hot and sunny. UK festivals are so 2012.

Celebrity you’re most looking forward to fucking up in 2013: Anyone who’s just entered CBB.

Book: Want to hunt down the original Party Monster book by James St James.

Film: ‘Carrie’.

Music and gigs: New albums by Fever Ray and Britney. And I DEMAND M.I.A go on tour.

Fashion Designer: Asger Juel Larsen.

Artist:Any new t-shirt lines by Proudlock of Made In Chelsea dynasty.

Exhibition: Same as above.

Festival: About time I got to Bestival, init.

Celebrity you’re most looking forward to fucking up in 2013: Joseph Gordon Levitt ( he’s got to go bad soon)

Book: Peter Murphy, Shall We Gather at the River. Amazing Irish novelist and journo at Hotpress magazine.

Film: Ooooh Dusty Hoffman’s directorial debut Quartet- I have much love for that man!

Music: Dublin’s Solar Bears. Amazing tripped out futuristic beats from this hard-working duo.

Gig: Jamie Lidell, 8th April in Toronto, Lees Palace

Fashion Designer: Two Brits – Meadham Kirchoff & also Louise Gray are my faves for their crazy, eccentric imaginations and rebellious spirits.

Artist: Stephen Maurice Graham- an utterly genius Belfast based illustrator. One to watch! Also discovered this guy recently whilst ‘Trendhunting’- Aakash Nihalani- amazing New York street artist who mainly uses tape.

Exhibition: Stefan Sagmeister ‘The Happy Show’, at the Design Exchange in Toronto until March 3 and onto LA.

Festival: Electric Picnic or Sonar in Barcelona
