It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Abba here at Spindle, so this news really whipped us into a frenzy.
About Agnetha: married to genius songwriter Björn Ulvaeus, it was this pairing coupled with fellow lovebirds Benny Andersson and Frida Lingstad that gave the world ABBA. Always publicity shy, Agnetha didn’t like to tour as it took her away from her children, and didn’t find singing onstage as much as a ‘turn-on’ as her fellow members. After both couples divorced and the band decided to take a break in 1982, Agnetha more or less disappeared from the spotlight. The Abba revival that took place in the 90s saw the other three members appear fairly regularly on documentaries and in personal appearances, but Agnetha always resisted. She finally reunited with her Abba buddies at the Swedish premiere of ‘Mamma Mia!’ in 2008 – it seems it took Meryl Streep to finally coax her out of retirement. Understandable.
Now back with a new song, refreshing mostly in that it plays to her strengths without being a throwback, and doesn’t try to be as painfully current as other aging artists have suggested you need to be (read: Cher’s dreadful David Guetta single, Madonna’s last two albums).
A warm ballad, then, that does hint at Agnetha’s own mythology; featuring as it does flashbacks to a 1970s couple in the midst of a breakup. Has Björn seen this? There are a few concessions to the modern dancefloor – a brief dubstep-lite breakdown being one of them – but none of this overpowers the beauty of the song. And looking super-fine in skinny sequin pants, sheer nude blouse, ankle boots and blazer ensemble, Agnetha is simply radiant throughout.
Did someone say ‘Abba reunion’?
