Fumbaling around with Fumbalinas

Meet Jodie Cartman aka head flower girl at Fumbalinas beautifully crafted floral headpieces.

HEY JODIE! Tell us about Fumbalinas – where did the name come from?
Heeey! So i began ‘fumbaling’ around a couple of years ago after buying a flower garland from a festival and realising it was pretty basic and naff and lacking any originality or inventive quality (in my opinion)! I started playing around with my own ideas and designs and turning them into wearable pieces, and hey presto – fumbalinas was born!

What’s your aims for the brand?
To expand, to experiment and to collaborate. I want to work with other designers, learn new techniques etc and continue to be inspired by new things/people/places and directly channel that into the brand and the pieces i make. I don’t want fumbalinas to be tied to one specific genre or style but to revel in freedom of expression and grow and breathe with each new piece/collection.

What can we expect from your next collection?

I’ve been working with alot of new materials and fresh techniques for this next collection. I love working with flowers and they have been at the core of my designs so far, but my new collection looks to exploit new materials and influences and to marry them with already established floral techniques. Think hazy romance….dreamy pastels…..

Who would you most like to be seen wearing Fumbalinas?

I think the ultimate would have to be Bjork. What a Gal. Also Grimes, Paloma Faith, Yolandi Visser, Gwen Stefani, Rosin Murphy , Beyonce – I could go ON and ON!!!

What designer would you most like to collaborate with and why?

Oooo thats a toughie – there are so many! I’m really into Mary Bensons current collection – great textures, playful patterns and iridescent shiny fabrics. Yum. I think if we two put our heads together we could potentially come up with a pretty special collection….(And shes a yorkshire lass too, like me). Although….Fred Butler is one of my favorite designers. Her use of angles, shapes, materials and colour in her designs gives me HUGE inspiration in my own work. A ‘fumbals and Fred’ mash up collection is a psychedelic-shiny-space-dream-bubble waiting to pop (the name even has a nice ring to it, don’t you think)!

What’s on your ipod right now?

FEMME – Double Trouble. Well worth a listen.
