Heather’s Label of the Day: Only Child London

Our editor Heather is interviewing her favourite designers, today she catches up with our Hackney Downs Studios neighbour Only Child London.

Tell me about your brand, how long have you been going and how did you get into designing?
Only Child is a handmade jewellery and accessories brand, we’re based in Hackney and I guess still pretty new, we’ve been up and running for almost 6 months now. I’m from a Fine Art background, I studied at Chelsea College of Art then ended up working for various fashion brands doing print designs by hand as well as assisting on shoots and eventually working for a couple of jewellery designers, I’ve always been big on jewellery so started designing and making my own…and one day Only Child happened!

Where does the name come from (if different from your own name)
I’m an Only Child!

What do you have planned for your next collection?

The next collection is inspired by a mix of cosmology, sacred geometry and the relationship between dark and light…so lots of monochrome and rainbow coloured stuff.

What are your aims for the brand?
Hopefully to keep growing, maintain a strong brand identity and end up with a widespread loyal customer base. I also want to develop a bigger range of other accessories and some printed items fairly soon.

Who’s your target customer?
To be really honest, a lot of the time I design for myself and just kind of hope other people like it too, but I suppose anyone who has an individual sense of style and a cosmic vibe!

Where are your stockists?
We’re stocked by a few online stores, in various shops around London including The Store at W Hotel as well as a new stockist in Ibiza. We also have our own e-shop.

What musician would you love to see wearing your designs?
I quite like Lana Del Ray’s style so maybe her.

What designer would you most like to collaborate with and why?
It would be awesome to collaborate with KTZ, I like how bold and a brazen their stuff is. I’ve always been a big fan of Pam Hogg too so I’d love to be able to collaborate with her in some way given the chance.

Describe your personal style….
Colourful, a bit boyish and diverse.

What’s the last exhibition you went to?
I think the last exhibition I went to was when I was in Japan at the International Manga Museum in Kyoto, they have a massive permanent collection of everything Manga related, loads of freaky old dolls as well!

What’s your favourite film?
I reckon it’s a 3-way tie between Mulholland Drive, E.T. and Audition.

What’s currently on your ipod?
Right now it’s paused half way through a Move D mix from July.
