Yup, it’s that time of year again when East London’s favourite (only?) community of warehouse-based artists get together to celebrate their work and the very special area they live in, with Hackney WickED.
The Wick launches its 6th year of events tonight, with the private view of the three day art spectacular. The festival describes it self as providing a platform for artists to showcase their work alongside established and international names, through Exhibitions, Open Studios, Film, Music, Fete for the WickED, Workshops, Artists Talks and Critical Debates.
A year on from the Olympics, it will be interesting to see how the neighbourhood has responded to the much lauded gentrification of the area, intended to appeal to tourists and businessmen alike. With the fear of rent prices being pushed up as a result and local artists being pushed out of the community they created, let’s hope that Hackney WickED will remain to fight for it’s corner of East London.
Hackney WickED Arts Festival launches tonight with a private view at 6-9pm. It continues Saturday and Sunday 12-6pm. More information can be found here.
