Here at Spindle we love featuring bright young film-makers that are going out there and doing it for themselves. Our super-fandom of web show The Outs is no secret, and we’re delighted that Adam Goldman and co. are back with a brand new show.
Whatever this is. follows the lives of three young Brooklynites – couple Sam and Lisa, and their gay friend and roommate Ari – as they face the universal challenges of being modern twenty somethings; taking shitty jobs to pay the rent, navigating the dating scene, maintaining their sanity and so on.
It’s territory that was covered in the The Outs but Whatever this is. is a more ambitious project with a broader canvas and a larger cast of colourful characters – whether they’re gay or straight, attached or single, looking or not looking – everyone’s just trying to get through the day.
Combined with the proceeds from a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, Whatever this is. looks and sounds better than almost anything on TV right now, but it’s the storytelling talent involved in the production that truly shines here. These are complex characters involved in relatable situations, beautifully played with refreshing honesty. Adam Goldman proves once again that he is one of the freshest new voices in film-making, and the entire cast and crew have managed to create frank, touching and funny show.
