Interview: Sam Irons

Sam Irons, 35, photographer… but what do we really know about him? His dad is an actor; he acted as a young man, attended university and is now a well-established and respected photographer. The current exhibition at Tim Sheward Projects showcases some of his best work with the pieces on display provoking a lot of thought and feeling from all who see it.  With the exhibition on until November 2nd, we caught up with him for a quick chat to find out about his work, what he draws on for inspiration and what plans he has for 2014.

How did you initially break into the art world, was it hard to get noticed?
Persistence is key.

What artists do you look up to?
Many. Amongst others, over the years, Gordon Matta-Clark, William Eggleston, Cy Twombly, Paul Outerbridge, John Baldessari, Wolfgang Tillmans… Currently, Annette Kelm, Lucas Blalock, Sarah Conaway, Talia Chetrit, Marie Angelletti…

Who has influenced your work?
All of the above and more.

Balice Hertling.

Favourite city for inspiration?
Marseille.

Any fashion brands you would love to work with?
None that spring to mind!

Any bands or artists you listen to whilst working for inspiration?
90s drum and bass – LTJ Bukem, Omni Trio, Ed Rush.

Any big plans for 2014?
Keep on keeping on.
