Eugene Quell Releases Weird Purr

This has been a long time coming. “Weird Purr” is the first track to be heard from indie/fuzz singer-songwriter Eugene Quell, and what a delight it is.

Operating under this new pseudonym, Tobias Hayes might just be about to finally get the recognition that has eluded him for so many years.

Not straying too far from his previous solo work, Weird Purr relies on a exquisitely simple acoustic guitar line to drive the song, with his gravelly vocals delicately snaking round the grungy drum loop.

Channelling a serious 90’s grunge/slacker vibe throughout the track, Hayes has enlisted the help of an unnamed female vocalist to provide the harmonies, and with a sheen to the track’s production, that hasn’t really been heard on his previous endeavours, Weird Purr is a sensational introduction to Eugene Quell.

An eponymous 4-track EP is set to arrive on New Years Day, courtesy of Brighton’s Sonic Anhedonic Recording Company, and I couldn’t be more excited. This could finally be his year.
