Dabbling in pop, indie and dance, IVES’ cross-genre labyrinth of soft sung vocals and hypnotizing rhythms is nothing but enchanting. Channeling mellow, emotionally fuelled vibes, the duo bring a whole new definition to the genre of pop, positioning themselves in a playlist adjacent to The xx and MS MR.
It’s clear that Josh Christopher and Melis Soyaslanova have an undeniable vocal chemistry. Through this rapport, they push the conventional boundaries of pop with glitchy, synthesized, multi-instrumental layers whilst their voices compliment one another in an ethereal fashion.
Their first track, ‘Lighthouse’ created a buzz on Soundcloud, with over 10,000 listens in just one week. Progressing from their initial atmospheric attention grabber, their second release, ‘Glow’, is a synthesized, up-beat and euphoric crowd pleaser – the type of song that instantaneously makes you foot-tap and grin. Toying next with a cover, IYES provide a refreshing take on a punchy, overplayed, radio chart topper – Beyonce’s Crazy in Love. At the danger of ruffling a feather or two, I dare say the duo put the true emotional integrity back into this record, with their evocatively sung vocals – the integrity that was strewn aside by the prospect of a number one hit.
Their latest offering, ‘Til Infinity’, is without a doubt their best track yet, and the 190,000 Soundcloud listens are testament to this. Fuelled with passion, it’s fresh, youthful, effervescent and experimental, playing with a handclap rhythm and soft breathy vocals. The record has attracted much attention from inescapable YouTube aficionados – Majestic Causal and The Sound You Need.
With such a stellar progression in just one year, we can only expect big things from IYES. I hand this wisdom over to you.
