Music Monday: Black Atlass ‘Jewels’

Monday 17 November 2014
Words Alice Bell

This has been a tough week for Music Monday; with a host of good videos just released and last week’s UKMVAs, I’ve had to really resist posting Metronomy or Kindness videos again (even though the latter may be my favourite with its beautiful simplicity and features the brilliant Robyn).

Instead I’ve gone for the most complex, surreal video with a very impressive story behind it. Yoann Lemoine, better known as Woodkid, has created an amazing computer generated world using a bit of DIY 3D scanning and a laptop. All whilst touring his own music; this is no mean feat. When talking about the extraordinary outcome, Lemoine explains:

“I was born with computers but I’ve always thought it was strange to use them to fake or replace reality. The whole quest for 3D, 4D, pixel resolution, frame rate, and progress in the CGI world only seems to be driven by a fascination for reality emulation, and not that much by artistry and fantasy. The reality pictured in this video only exists in the computer I used to create the piece. It’s fascinating and alienating too.”
