US hip hop mainstay Lauryn Hill has announced she will not be performing in Israel, announcing in a Facebook post that her attempt to play the Palestinian Territories “proved to be a challenge”.
The statement comes just three days before she was due to play the city of Tel Aviv. Hill stated that she would “seek a different strategy to bring my music to all of my fans in the region”.
Her scheduled appearance in Israel had drawn fierce online criticism from Palestinian supporters, with one US-lead Boycott group publishing an article saying that “the presence of artists is routinely used by Israel to legitimize its policies and maintain its reputation as a normal member of the international community”.
It’s been an otherwise successful year for The Fugees star, with news coming last month that her seminal 1998 album ‘The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill’ will be inducted into ‘The Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry’.
