From time to time, when seeking new material to review, I get sent music from artists or bands that tend to not have received much recognition from the music press, and curious to find more, it’s not hard to decipher which ones don’t receive much press for simply not having very strong merits; they often tend to be associated with lines and phrases such as ‘they’re not bad you know’ or ‘they’re on the edge of a breakthrough’. Unfortunately, The Wild Mercury Sound, their name apparently taken from a Bob Dylan quote, are another musical group which would find themselves somewhere within this paradigm, because if they ever found themselves to be on the edge of a breakthrough, then they’d be breaking through a wall of margarine with a plastic knife. I feel almost sorry to be so inclement towards a band that could cause no musical offence, but that’s what I’m getting at here: there is no edge to The Wild Mercury Sound, and their debt to Bob Dylan probably doesn’t help them much either. Damn, I’m aching to listen to a band jagged and edgy enough to cause some serious musical offence.

Their new single ‘Slow’ will be ready for release in March. The opening of the song resembles something from Radiohead’s Pablo Honey before the instruments cut dead leading straight to the lead singer who sounds not dissimilar to an early Alex Turner. That’s the problem here: no instruments, just singing. No propulsion, energy, drive, the stop-start nature of the instrument work is the cardinal downfall of the song, it gives the entire thing ambiguity, but where’s the coherence and consistency? The instruments don’t serve as a persistency as a song and the vocals aren’t virile enough to carry the thing through by itself; people aren’t going to want to listen to something that has all the energy of a knackered old bus. The Wild Mercury Sound simply don’t have the edge: and so you should just let them remain blowing in the wind.
