At their annual Conference, Google announced a partnership with clothing giants Levi’s to indivisibly and seamlessly integrate computers into your clothing.
Operating under the name ‘Project Jacquard’, the pairing takes the first legitimate steps towards a way of controlling, or even housing, complex and powerful systems in the seams of your jacket.
Ivan Poupyrev, ‘Technical Program Lead’ at Google, says “the structure of textiles is the same as the structure of a touch screen” and “that means if you just replace some of the threads in textiles with conductive threads, you should be able to weave a textile which can recognise a variety of simple touch gestures”.
So does this mean we’re a step closer to TV remotes integrated into silk fedoras? Hopefully not, but the promotional video (available in the player above) does indicate that we’re starting out on a journey which will lead to some very impressive tech in the near-future.
