Get Loose With Johnny Vaguess

Tuesday 30 June 2015
Words Ailis Mara

Johnny Vaguess is a quintessential DIY gem plucked from the sunburnt streets of California, amplified through cassette musings and endless touring of his west coast habitat and beyond. Johnny’s newest release ‘Bodhi Collection’ brings together his entire work into one beautifully remastered punch to the face.

Vaguess continues a long and well reported history of Californian Do It Yourselfers (San Pedro, home of the kings of Econo ‘Minutmen’ were born just up the road from his base in Dana Point) in an age where it’s become easier and more common to impersonate than embody.

The first Vaguess dropped in 2012 with the self-released Back Off Warchild (playing below) and was a raw burst of garage rock, reinforced with elements of snarling punk.

Well, let’s cut to why we’re here; it’s three years on and the band’s beginnings, and middle, have been announced as a sprawling, remastered release through Sinderlyn Records.¬†Bodhi Collection¬†is a snapshot of sonic passion and chaotic screams direct from Cali’s finest and includes the truly amazing/hilarious/disturbing Sinkpisser (playing below).
