Brace Yourself: An Emoji Movie Is In the Pipeline

It’s the underdog story of the century: the humble emoticon has evolved from being used to distinguish the angsty lyrics in you MSN Messenger tagline to a multi-million pound film franchise.

In what was reported to have been a three-way bidding war between Warner Bros, Paramount and Sony, the latter has emerged successful at landing the rights to an animated Emoji movie. Sony Pictures Animation has recruited writer Eric Siegel and director Anthony Leondis (who’s recent work included heading up the latest Kung Fu Panda film) to steer this big-budget flick away from the jagged rocks which once tore out the fur of Garfield, and, more recently, George Lucas’s 2015 flop Strange Magic.

In all honestly we’re hoping this project will yield an unexpected gem when it is released in a few years time, but we’ll be staying cynical until proven otherwise.
