This week’s onslaught of grey skies, never-ending drizzle and chilly winds can only mean one thing – summer is now over, and autumn is here to stay. But there’s no reason to get down; after all, the arrival of a new season brings with it a great opportunity to experiment with your look. Our resident beauty expert, hair and makeup artist Jay Pinxie, is at hand to help, bringing with her all the latest trends she helped create at London Fashion Week for the A/W15 shows. You might not be able to work these looks like a pro, but you can definitely have fun trying!
Hi Spindle readers – Jay here!
Now that we’re that much closer to autumn, it feels like the right time to revisit the A/W15 shows and share all the hot new season hair and makeup trends with you. Don’t forget, the trends started on the runway always filter down into street style too, so you can help bring these looks to life just doing what you do.
The perfect trend for tomboys, A/W15 is all about creating masc-femme beauty looks. Very straight hair is slicked back for a masculine effect, complete with minimal makeup like nude eyes, strong drawn-in brows with subtle shaping and beautiful barely-there foundation with dewy highlights. This look works really well with the season’s styled suits and sharp tailoring (facial hair optional).
Colour was back in a big way on the A/W runways, dominated by three key shades; juicy orange, deep blue and shocking pink. Block colour applications create standout looks, filling the eye space in true 70’s-inspired style. Might not be totally appropriate for work, although you’ll certainly turn a few heads on the commute.
Flash the Lash
Fake lashes are sneaking their way back into catwalk shows, creating bold and dramatic looks. Team lashes with liner for an ultra-defined aesthetic.
Braids & Ponytails
I was super excited to work on this trend! It made me want to pull out my wig block and start plaiting like a little kid. Messy back-combed plaits, ponytail plaits, tiny braids, cornrows, inside braids… you name it, designers were using it. I also noticed the return of basket weave plaiting, which is a direct nod at the ongoing 70’s styling inspiration we’ve seen lately. Whatever style you want to go with, feel free to have fun with it – playful plaits are key.
A/W15 Shopping List
Want to have a go at these looks yourselves? Here are the must-have products I recommend.
Black kohl eye pencil
A palette of bold eye colours with strong pigment
A primer with illuminator, for that squeaky-clean clear skin look
Clip-in hair extensions, to max out those plaits
Hairspray – lots of it!
Rubber & covered hair bands
A backcombing brush
… Alternatively, if this all sounds like a bit much and you #justcant be bothered, just team a simple ponytail with a pair of huge Jackie O-style shades.
