As part of the super exciting launch of Radio Kangol in the UK, we’ve interviewed a number of prolific artists and labels who will be featured on the streaming service over the next few weeks. The launch also coincides with the new clothing collaboration between global streetwear brand Kangol and up-and-coming East London label Terrible Movement (find out more here!), and Radio Kangol will be played in-store during the KNGL x TRRBLMVMNT Boxpark store takeover. The playlist has been chosen specially to fit the London-inspired urban apparel range, so you can get into the mood as you shop the collection.

Today we’re putting the spotlight on Burger Records, a California-based label known for embracing niche genres and promoting cool, up-and-coming artists. Amongst their signings is punk rocker Brontez Purnell, who creates raw, energetic music in his band The Younger Lovers, and Jake Culkowski of Magic Jake & The Power Crystals (as well as King Tuff). We caught up with Brontez and Jake to chat about… well, pretty much everything.

Where is home?

Brontez: I’m originally from Triana Alabama (pop. 490), but have lived in Oakland California for 13 years. My heart belongs to both places.

Jake: Los Angeles currently, but my heart will always be in Michigan.

How would you describe your sound?

Brontez: Mutant R+B meets ROCK ‘N’ ROLL BABY.

Jake: Our music sounds like four rock dudes playing loud music in a Detroit, basement recorded on an 8-track cassette recorder.

What do you look towards for creative inspiration?

Brontez: The Orishas/The Ancestors/Barbara Lynn.

Jake: Inspiration comes for everywhere; all around you. But sometimes it takes jamming really loud with your buddies for ideas to come to fruition.

What is your favourite place to visit when touring?

Brontez: ENGLAND (the boys there have the prettiest accents).

Jake: Gosh, so many… Amsterdam, New Orleans, Vancouver, Austin, Miami, Barcelona…

How would you describe your personal style?

Brontez: 1996.

Jake: Like an old Polaroid of your dad.

What’s your spirit animal?

Brontez: EARTHA KITT!!!!!!!!

Jake: Dog.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Brontez: I have ALWAYS wanted to be a SUPER TELEPATH like Professor X!!!!!!

Jake: It would be to never get hungover.

What was your worst day job ever and why?

Brontez: Every job I’ve ever had has been ‘the worst’. Fun fact: I’ve been hired from every job I’ve ever had.

Jake:  I did construction work before (which I enjoyed), but Detroit has very cold winters. I can remember being wet, tired and freezing and thinking to myself, ‘I gotta find a way out of this’.

 Who do you most admire?

Brontez: Myself.

Jake: My dad. He’s a badass guitar/bass player. He was a Detroit firefighter and a marine. He’s been married to my mom for 36 years. I gave him plenty of headaches growing up, and he’s always been there for me… he drove with me cross-country when I moved to LA in 2012.

What profession (other than your own) would you like to attempt?

Brontez: I would love to be a stay-at-home father!

Jake: Lifeguard.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring three things, what would they be?

Brontez: I would bring rhythm, music, and my man- who could ask for anything more?!?!?!

Jake: My guitar, babe and dog.

On a scale of 1-10, how honest are you? (… Is that an honest answer?)

Brontez: It depends on the day. If 1 is the lowest and 10 is the highest, at this interview I would say 10. If you’re my college loan officer, I’d say a -3 :/

Jake: 9 – yes.

 What’s your favourite cereal?

Jake: Cheerios.

If there is a fork in the road, do you go left or right?

Brontez: I’d probably just stand at the fork… and be completely mortified and paralysed with fear, anxiety, and indecision.

Jake: The path is not predetermined, but when the fork appears, the answer will present itself.

A penguin walks through the door wearing a sombrero. What does he say, and why is he here?

Brontez: “I’M NOT REALLY HERE, YOU’RE JUST ON ACID (then a Donna Summer song starts playing out of NOWHERE). THIS HAS REALLY HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE!

Jake: He tells me that I ate too many mushrooms, and then starts a dance party.

Beatles or Rolling Stones?

Brontez: Younger Lovers.

Jake: Beatles.

Beer or Champagne?

Brontez: Whiskey.

Jake: Beer.

Heads or Tails?

Brontez: Tails?

Jake: Heads.

Jazz or Rock ‘n’ Roll?

Brontez: Cumbia.

Jake: Rock.

Rock, Paper or Scissors?

Brontez: ROCK ME BABY.

Jake: Rock.
