Their success has proved to many naysayers that there is a market for Grime music, whereas previously many artists who started out making Grime had to change trajectory if they wished to attain mainstream success. Consequently after the stratospheric rise of Stormzy and co, these same record labels who wrote off the genre less than a decade ago are now on the lookout for the next big Grime star. This has started something of a feeding frenzy in South London seeing some of the hottest new talents being snapped up by major labels, with Bonkaz being one of the lucky individuals earmarked for success in 2016.
Having already established himself last year with two big singles ‘We Run The Block’ and ‘You Don’t Know’, as well as being the face of genderless clothing line Farida Apparel, Bonkaz looks set to build on this by starting the year off strong with the release of #MixtapeOfTheYear. The free release showcases the South Londoner’s lyrical acrobatics as he treats us to 11 tracks of gritty lyricism and even gets grime head honcho Stormzy to feature on one of the tracks. Bonkaz said ‘I wanted to start the year right, with a bang. You can be so free with a mixtape’ – and he’s done just that. The tape can be listened to here and be sure you get your hands on tickets to Bonkaz headline show on April 7 at Visions Video Bar, London.
