The Great Escape: Interview with The Rubens

Australian band The Rubens played a couple of shows during The Great Escape weekend (one at Concorde 2’s Aussie BBQ). We managed a quick chat with Elliott Margin, who plays keys and sings backing vocals in the band, alongside his brothers Sam and Zaac, Scott Baldwin and Will ‘Hog’ Zeglis.

So, why The Rubens, and not The Margins, Baldwins or Zeglises?
We named the band after our younger brother, who plays drums but refused to be in the band because he didn’t like the music. His nickname at the time was Ruben, for some reason, so we decided to stick it to him.

Tell us what you most enjoyed about The Great Escape, other than your own sets..
I caught the end of City Calm Down‘s set, and they were really great live!

Favourite thing about Brighton?
The boardwalk was pretty iconic. We had some fish and chips there (which claimed to be the best in the world) – they turned out to be fairly average, but it didn’t ruin the day.

Favourite Australian artists?
City Calm Down and Gang Of Youths.

Plans for the summer?
We head back now for an Australian headline tour, but are working on returning to the UK soon!

Before they head back to Australia, however, they play London’s The Dome (Tufnell Park) this Thursday!
