LCM: Bobby Abley

If there’s one thing you can rely on Bobby Abley for, it’s his persistent knack for lively, fun and animated design. Never failing to offer his signature, season after season, SS17 saw no less colour and character than to be expected with his unique take on men’s sportswear inspired pieces.

This time round, Bobby Abley whisked us off our feet with a first class ticket to the Cave of Wonders by the fabulously exclusive airline, Magic Carpet Airways. So fabulous, that the runway holidaymakers donned complimentary sequinned gowns and vibrant matching neck pillows. This was a colourful affair for travelling guests in bright head towels, flame emblazoned trunks and bathing suits emulating the red hot summer trip theme for SS17. With the fiery hot flame design against black backgrounds, we see Abley’s mature side to his aesthetic; crafting sex appeal from a collection that is ultimately playful and full of youth.

A secondary theme of Disney displayed this playfulness, with large cartoons of Aladdin’s Genie character printed across sweatshirts and shorts in true Abley tongue-in-cheek style. This is the designer’s third collection with Disney, and the theme continued throughout in obvious boldness as well as subtle motifs, with long beige dresses with “rub me the right way” sloganed across the chest and the genie’s lamp printed across the bottom, to middle eastern silk ponchos reminiscent of Aladdin’s magic carpet.

Model’s carried travel teddy bears in various materials to match their outfits – some in dark patent black to compliment matching jackets and shorts – others in luminous neon pink. Accessories like these may well seem like one of Abley’s more gimmicky additions, yet this is a collection full of comfortable pieces that take on the practical elements of male sportswear with the quirky touches and show-stopping colour that we all know and love Bobby Abley for.
