Toro Y Moi ‘Live From Trona’: A Concert Film Masterpiece

Wednesday 17 August 2016

Feature image: Toro Y Moi: Live from Trona, by Ryan Carmody

If you know your Toro Y Moi, then you’ll know that he is just as good at selecting the directors behind his colourful, charismatic music videos as he is at making music itself. This time Toro Y Moi (his real name Chas Bundick), has returned with a filmed live concert called Live in Trona, shot all in one day on the rugged terrain of the Mohave desert which encompasses parts of the California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona.

It is however the astounding work of Chaz’s long time collaborative partner, Harry Israelson, who directed the film that has this time caught our eye; their previous work together can be seen in Toro Y Moi’s ‘Say That’ music video that places Chaz among some impressive, vast landscape backdrops. The live concert film, shot from sunrise to sunset, includes the camera crew, dolly tracks and the sound and light equipment in it’s panning shots, giving emphasis on the unique event of filming a concert in the desert. Soaked in summertime hues, the film aptly compliments Toro Y Moi’s known chillwave style while capturing the magic of his previously released tracks alongside some new music. Adding lines of funky guitar to his otherwise easy-going sound, there’s a real sense that Chaz has used this opportunity to develop musically as a live performer, while being one of a few to offer up a visual feast to accompany an entire live album.
