NYFW SS17: Interview with The Blonds

It’s been ten years since Blonds first showcased at New York Fashion Week, and since then their designs have been seen on the backs of the elite – most notably Beyonce’s crystal bodysuit on her ‘Mrs Carter World Tour’ and Lady Gaga’s custom-made number in her ‘Paparazzi’ music video. A decade on from their debut and not much has changed for Phillipe and David Blonds, their drag-esque sparkling statement pieces still dominate onlookers attention with the same fiery attitude that helped to establish them in the first instance. We caught up with the duo to talk about how they feel on Blonds 10th birthday, their NYFW soundtrack and what they have planned for the coming future.

10 years on, is this this what you envisaged for your brand?
Phillipe: Definitely, and it is what we both wanted for so long and it feels amazing when you accomplish anything you’ve worked very hard to achieve. We have so much more to do of course but we like to be present and in the moment, fully experience everything in life because there is only one opportunity.

Who selects the music for the show, and how long does that decision process take?
David: We collect music constantly and then work with the DJ to put the pieces together and bounce ideas back and forth for the score of the shows. This can be songs from years passed that inspired us or something new.  Music is a way to communicate so It doesn’t matter what genre it is or when it came out as long as it tells the story.

Phillipe, your outfits are always the show stopper, is this the first, or the last piece you design?
Phillipe: It’s the starting point for every collection and then we build out from there.

What’s coming up next for you?
David: We just relaunched our site theblonds.nyc , a collaboration with Lexus on Car wraps , our first pop up with MADE Fashion Week called FYI , and also partnered with Moda Operandi on a specially curated trunk show. There are a ton of projects coming up this year and we’re looking forward to our own ecommerce very soon!

What advice would you give to anyone just starting out in the industry?
Phillipe: Dream, dream big, go big be willing and ready to work hard and do whatever it takes to make that dream happen. Always maintain your integrity, if something doesn’t feel right it usually isn’t. It’s not always going to be what you expect but just go for it because you will eventually achieve what you believe!
