Women take the lead in the Griffin Art Prize shortlist

Monday 10 October 2016

This year’s shortlist for this year’s Griffin Art Prize has been announced, and, unusually for the still male dominated art world, five out of six of the artists are women.

The prize is awarded by Griffin Gallery to emerging artists. The winner will receive a three-month residency at the gallery, with accommodation, materials, workspace and support provided, designed to develop their work and launch their career.

The shortlist consists of Pallas Citroen, Cynthia Cruz, Olivia KempUesung Lee, Ana Milenkovic and Emma Papworth, who have all graduated from a leading UK art school in recent years, including Central St Martins, Goldsmiths, Wimbledon College of Art, The Ruskin School and Glasgow School of Art.

The chosen artists each have a distinctive personal style, with the shortlist reflecting a diverse, innovative range of work, from drawings and paintings to sculptures and mixed media pieces.

This years judges are Rebecca Lewin, Exhibitions Curator at Serpentine Galleries, Jenny Lindén Urnes, Chairman of Lindéngruppen, Becca Pelly-Fry, Head Curator of Griffin Gallery and Vicky Wright, the British artist.
