Amir Miah grew up on a rough London estate where more young people went to prison than continued their education. Amir used to buy and sell bicycles so he could afford the things his parents were unable to provide, which led him to realise the worth of bikes. He knew he had to take action in his situation, but not just for himself, for his community too. So he started Your Bike, a youth led social enterprise that gives young people in need of a break training and employment opportunities. The project has helped ex-offenders, those involved in organised crime, and those in need of employment to get involved with bikes and turn their lives around. Amir explained, “We get bikes from the Met Police. We up-cycle those and then we sell them on to provide the training. We get our trainees to learn the retail side of things as well, to learn customer service skills and the value of bikes.” Amir found a way to change the environment he was in and the path it could lead to by also providing opportunities for those around him. His decision to help his community and those who are struggling is truly admirable and inspirational.

Lorraine Galvin’s story follows her transformation from survivor to saviour. At just 17 Lorraine and four more rowing crew members capsized in an area with no rescue service, spending nearly 3 hours in the water believing there was no chance of rescue. After this gruelling, life-changing event, Lorraine took control and chose to turn the ordeal into an opportunity to save other people’s lives. The summer after her near death experience, she saw an advert for volunteers to join the newly formed Wexford Inshore Rescue, and undertook rigorous training to become a Lifeboat Crew Member. She is now one of 16 volunteers with Wexford RNLI, who took over the Inshore Rescue, and are on call 24/7. Lorraine sought courage from what must have been a traumatic event, to not only transform her own life but to use her experience to help, devoting her time to rescuing others. Check out her story here. Universal Channel’s 100% Character Uncovered moving online series demonstrates how anyone can pull themselves out of their circumstances, turn a situation around, pursue their dreams and give back to their communities, helping people along the way.
