Ami Shimoni’s hipster take on world leaders

  • Words: Spindle

Illustrator Ami Shimoni has created ‘Hipstory,’ a series of images of world leaders reimagined as hipsters, complete with alternative biographies by Stephen Ellcock. The humorous and playful series sees iconic politicians and leaders illustrated against brightly coloured backgrounds and complete with edgy hairstyles, tattoos and piercings.

The illustration of the newly inaugurated US President Donald Trump is particularly amusing, claiming the “businessman, politician and all-American braggart…has a sensitive side.” It recasts him as what is surely the opposite of the man himself, “He unwinds with the love poetry of Sufi master Rumi and rereads Sylvia Plath’s Ariel at least twice a year.” Meanwhile, Barack Obama is recast as Barrie OB, who is “making the most of his free time and has signed up for classes in urban foraging, beekeeping, taxidermy and kokedama (the Japanese art of sculpting moss balls).”

The series also sees Margaret Thatcher as a cyclist who will plough “into any unwary pedestrian who she suspects may harbour socialist tendencies,” and Queen Elizabeth II as a flower crown wearing, “queen of the mixtape.” Winston Churchill is reimagined as the CEO of a chain of boutique health spas, Angela Merkel in an upcoming electronica musician, Mahatma Gandhi is a tea and coffee enthusiast, and Hilary Clinton runs a “small-batch, hand-crafted American heritage denim brand” with her husband “‘Bonnie Prince’ Billy Clinton.” Shimoni has also created hipster illustrations of many more iconic world leaders, from Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King, which can be viewed on her website.

The ‘Hipstory’ set of postcards is published by Laurence King. View more of Shimoni’s work and purchase prints on her website.
