This Friday, an exhibition about the style of the North of England and its influence on culture and the fashion world will open at Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery. ‘North: Identity, Photography, Fashion’ explores the way Northern England has been depicted and constructed through cultural history, fashion photography, documentary images, artwork, interviews, and fashion collections.

Clothing on display will include staples of northern style such as iconic adidas archive shoes, a parka by Raf Simons from his renowned Autumn/Winter 2003 collection which featured Peter Saville’s cover art for Joy Division and New Order, designs from former label New Power Studio, as well as work from rising talents Christopher Shannon and John Skelton.

‘North’ will feature imagery from some of the fashion industry’s key creatives, including Jamie Hawkesworth, Alasdair McLellan, Glen Luchford, and Nick Knight. The work of contemporary artists such as Turner Prize winners Mark Leckey and Jeremy Deller will also be featured, as will new collaborative work, including a project by Hacienda designer Ben Kelly and American fashion designer Virgil Abloh.

The exhibition will document and celebrate the region’s creative output, from fashion designers such as Paul Smith, to the music scene with Madchester of the 80s and 90s, but also to the everyday Northern people, aiming to capture the culture they would have experienced, and the impact this has had on both a homegrown and global scale.
