This year Wan Hung made his formal debut at London Fashion Week Men’s, showcasing a collection inspired by his native Hainan, an island in China, and his memories of Hainasese Chinese New Year celebrations. This nostalgia is evident in his accompanying fashion film ‘Good Fortune,’ which shows models not only displaying his new designs, but preparing and eating traditional food together for the celebrations. The film is certainly playful and fun in content, but also in style, featuring small shots collaged over larger ones, showcasing Hung’s colourful collection – everything you could want from New Year’s celebrations.
His AW17 collection is a blend of traditional Chinese Tang suit robes with Western tailoring and styles. The playful prints were developed from the Chinese character for ‘Good Luck,’ and traditional techniques such as Chinese knotting were used alongside contemporary fabrics such as glittery materials, denim, yarn, and PVC. The garments are brightly coloured, featuring a palette of red, silver, gold, and an ocean blue, referencing his island home.
