Bernie Sanders on being an inspiration for Balenciaga’s AW17 collection

Paris Fashion Week Men’s saw Balenciaga showcase a brilliant AW17 collection that paid tribute to Democrat politician Bernie Sanders. Numerous garments, from oversized scarves to bomber jackets, referenced Sanders’ campaign logo, putting the brand’s name in place of his. Liberal fashion lovers went crazy for these looks. In a recent appearance on CNN’s ‘State of the Union,’ the Bern laughed as he was asked about this influence on the fashion world.

When presenter Jake Tapper asked if he ever thought he’d become a fashion icon, he responded, “No, not quite, Jake, I think of my many attributes, being a great dresser or a fashion maven is not one of them.” Well, Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia must have disagreed. During his presidential bid, Sanders’ often rather unkempt appearance was praised for providing an alternative to Donald Trump’s narcissism and obsession with self-image, which has only been further exaggerated in the past week with a report that President Trump insists male staff “need to have a certain look,” and female employees were told to “dress like women,” whatever that means.
