Music Video Monday: Maggie Rogers – On + Off

You may have first heard of Maggie Rogers from the viral video of a stunned Pharrell Williams listening to her song ‘Alaska,’ or maybe you’ve seen her name on countless ‘ones to watch for 2017’ lists. Or perhaps you’re yet to discover her. Either way, she’s a hugely talented singer-songwriter who is making waves with her gorgeous music. She recently released a video for her new song ‘On + Off,’ which like her previous songs, also has an amazing rhythm, stunning instrumentation, and showcases Maggie’s folksy yet powerful vocals.

The video is also extremely fun and playful, seemingly simple at first with Maggie and friends dancing in a studio together. However, a simple video this is not; it was filmed all in one shot, directed by Maggie’s friend and creative collaborator Zia Anger, who previously made the videos for ‘Alaska’ and ‘Dog Years.’ The camera moves to reveal the backdrop of the set, breaking the forth wall, there are numerous costume changes, and the dancers bring fun props and bits of the set into their relaxed dance routines. The one shot video is a triumph, looking absolutely effortless, a delightfully playful video that perfectly suits the easy-breezy song.
