Ones To Watch 2017

Thursday 02 February 2017

We’re the biggest champions of new music so thought we’d  compile a rundown artists that we think are gonna blow all of our minds in 2017. You’re welcome.

Huntar is a 23 year old, London based electronic pop and futuristic R&B artist. He stormed through 2016 gaining 10 million streams worldwide, his single ‘4AM’ was added to the FIFA 17 soundtrack and has been played as Zane Lowe’s World Record. 2017 is expected to escalate further for Huntar, kicking it off with a new release of ‘4AM’. The track features a collaboration with American Rapper, ILoveMakonnen who is signed to Drake’s OVO label and featured in Drakes hit ‘Tuesday’.

The Japanese House

Amber Bain, better known as The Japanese House is definitely one to watch this year. Amber manages to combine pop with an eerie reverb sound throughout her music, which is strangely addictive. In 2016 she released the EP, ‘Swim Against The Tide’ and a month later she was supporting The 1975’s sell out tour, performing to crowds of 20,000 people at The O2– all before the release of an album! I look forward to seeing what 2017 has to offer!

Tash Sultana

Tash Sultana is an Australian based artist whose buzz initially kicked off from her street performances and YouTube videos going viral. She is a truly diverse artist, in sound and style, she solely combines beat boxing to guitar throughout her music. She released her EP, ‘Notion’ in 2016 and shortly after sold out a World tour. Her 2017 is following in a similar style with a new date being added to her London stop as her 2 dates at Scala have already sold out.

Black Saint

Black Saint are the enigmatic UK collective who have been collaborating together to combine their skills as DJs, producers and songwriters to deliver a sound that will be played across dance floors, house parties and festivals, globally. The trio have pendulously been biding their time, honing their craft and readying themselves for their debut release ‘Could You Love Me’ which embodies an inventive fusion of house, R&B, trap and hip-hop and is racking up a staggering 2.1M streams on Spotify. We have our eye on these boys and can’t wait to see what else is coming from them in 2017.

Ariana and the Rose

Already a Spindle favourite, Ariana and the Rose is set to really crossover in 2017. With a few previous singles already under her belt, the New York native has her sights set firmly on a global takeover with new track ‘Love You Lately’, which is a collaboration with the incredible RKCB. With plaudits coming from a diverse range of media including Nylon, Clash, Noisey and V Mag, we’re gagging to hear what else this future star has in store for us for the remainder of the year.

After dropping a string of fresh tracks last year and a video for his highly credible single ‘Location’, 18- year-old Khalid has become hotly tipped to be a major one to watch this year. The El Paso, Texas based R&B singer has rapidly grown a strong following online and in streams, with over 2M monthly Spotify listeners which is growing by it’s thousands.

Tom Walker

A Relentless Record artist who’s roster includes Bryson Tiller and Nadia Rose, both who have seen great success very early into their respective careers. Mancunion Tom seems like another success story unravelling as he holds your attention with his unique soulful brash vocals and powerful lyrics.

The ambiguous R&B singer has brought many highly anticipating to know the face the silhouette cover and the voice behind the captivating soulful album ‘H.E.R. Volume 1’. LA Times said that her label RCA sent out a one-line press release to media which stated “I can’t tell you much about H.E.R. just yet but give it a listen”. Very much intrigued about what will be revealed in the next couple of months.

GIA has been on our radar for a while now but is set for big things in 2017. A popstar who exists without a filter, GIA cuts through to audiences looking for artists who care more about speaking their truth than toeing the line. GIA has recently been in the studio with producers like producers like Switch (Major Lazer) and King Henry (Justin Bieber) and getting ready for inevitable world domination.

Stefflon Don

Stefflon Don wrapped up 2016 with the release of her debut mixtape Real Ting which showcased her fiery flow and attention-grabbing wordplay. This east Londoner is just getting started and we couldn’t be more excited.

Bonzai, who released her third EP Lunacy in 2016, unites elements of pop, jazz, hip hop, dancehall and grime to create her technicolour palate. With her genre-hopping approach to making music and distinctive visuals, Bonzai is an artist with seemingly endless creativity making her one of 2017’s hottest prospects.

The BBC may just have hit something special this year by placing Ray BLK at no.1 on their infamous annual ‘Sound Of…’ poll. With the R&B songstress featured on almost every ‘One To Watch’ list from here to the end of the rainbow, there’s a reason why. The South Londoner manages to capture a uniquely honest, intimate insight into her world and the world of many 20-somethings (perfectly expressed on Stormzy-featuring ‘My Hood’) with a world-class sound. Her songs don’t shy away of difficult topics, instead exploring themes of identity, personal relationships, bittersweet compromise and self-belief, all the while staying true to a clear vision and a catchy hook. The singer may be unsigned at present but it’s not through lack of label interest; make no mistake, Ray BLK is doing things her way. All eyes may be on BLK but the stars have aligned for her to deliver. Expect big things this year.

James Hersey

James Hersey finished 2016 on an incredible high; debut single ‘Miss You’ racked up over 36 million streams on Spotify alone in just over three months. Recently named as one of Annie Mac’s #NewNames and with acclaim across DIY, EARMILK, BBC, Hilly Dilly, Wonderland Magazine and many more, James’ success shows no signs of slowing down and ‘Miss You’ is now sitting pretty on 60 million + streams. The track, originally co-produced by James alongside Ed Sheeran collaborator Will Hicks and mixed by Stephen Fitzmaurice (Disclosure, Sam Smith), received a stellar remix treatment from HONNE that catapulted the track up to #1 on the Hype Machine chart. Shortly after came a support slot with HONNE on their European tour, and then a headline slot at Kamio for The Great Escape’s First Fifty show. With a second single on the way and more new music to follow, ‘Miss You’ is just the very tip of the iceberg…

Rhys Lewis

After 12 months of writing music for his debut record, Rhys Lewis revealed his debut single ‘Waking Up Without You’ late last year. Packed with raw soul and a harder, grittier edge, the track showcases Rhys’ captivating ability to perfectly encapsulate lost loves and regrets with the anger that can sneak up with it. The track quickly catapulted to the #1 spot on Spotify’s prestigious Viral Chart and went on to total over 170,000 streams in just two weeks. Following this a headline show at Servant Jazz Quarters sold-out in just 48 hours. 2017 will see Rhys reach full album-mode, and with these promising beginnings we predict it will make quite a stir.

Formally known as the drummer ‘The PSM’ who worked with Gorillaz and Damon Albarn and music director for the likes of FKA Twigs and Jamie XX, PAULi is well on his way in proving he can also be an incredible artist in his own right. All you need to do is just check out the stunning trailer for his track ‘The Idea Of Tomorrow’ and instantly want to know more. Looking forward to seeing what he has in store for us this year.

SAINT WKND is 22-year-old Munich resident, who has built up an impressive following online after a series of bootlegs and official remixes for Australian future-beat boss Chet Faker, indie group Saint Motel as well as Chicago based Louis The Child among others. With over 25 million plays across his tracks on SoundCloud, SAINT WKND doesn’t plan on slowing down his rapid ascent any time soon. Latest offering ‘Golden’ is the first taster of a forthcoming EP, set for release later this year.

Connie Constance

Connie’s captivating voice is enough to sway you to want to listen to more and inevitably become a fan. The London based singer-songrwiter mixes soul, indie, jazz and alternative music to create music for escapism and to unwind to. A young artist with a bright future.
