Spindle Selects: Tracks of the Week

Check out what’s been the soundtrack to our working week.

Dagny – ‘Wearing Nothing’

Everything Dagny touches seems to turn to gold, including last year’s ‘Ultraviolet’ EP… even the obligatory acoustic track was prone to repeat. Now she’s back with new single ‘Wearing Nothing’ and it’s primed to be a big summer hit for the Norwegian star. Laden with funk, it has a belter of a chorus about being naked both emotionally and physically – it’s pretty much the perfect soundtrack to a euphoric skinny dipping, leaping-off-a-rope-swing into-the-lake-and-splashing-around summer rom-com montage (or something).

Grace Carter – ‘Silence’

Brighton-based Grace Carter is just 19-years-old and and yet ‘Silence’ shows a level of musical maturity far beyond her years. The understated track builds until it crashes into a fist-clenching chorus with Carter’s stunning vocal baring all. It’s the first track to be taken from her forthcoming debut album so keep your eyes peeled.

Carly Rae Jepsen – ‘Cut To The Feeling’

Such is Carly Rae Jepsen’s unstoppable hit-making that new track ‘Cut To The Feeling’ was actually supposed to be on the popstar’s last album ‘E•MO•TION’ but didn’t make the cut. That’s testament to two things, a) that ‘E•MO•TION’ is an earth-shakingly good album, and b) a mistake was made. ‘Cut To The Feeling’ is soaring, glittering, joyous, transcendental and the best 3 minutes and 25 seconds of your week.

Bryson Tiller – ‘Somethin Tells Me’

Two years after his debut album, Trapsoul, was released, Bryson Tiller surprisingly dropped his second album, True to Self, last Friday, weeks before it was due to be released. Somethin’ Tells Me is the main single from the album. With Tiller’s signature slow but groovy R&B sound, he tells a story about a crumbling relationship that is lacking communication and showing love towards each other.

Little Mix ft. Stormzy – ‘Power’

Girl group, Little Mix, released and remixed Power as a dynamic new single from their fourth album Glory Days. In true Little Mix fashion, the track is an upbeat pop feminist anthem that makes women feel empowered and like they “got the power”. The single is a remix due to the girl group’s collaboration with Stormzy, who appears on the bridge, who also raps about empowering women with lyrics like, “You can be a woman and a boss and wear the trousers at the same time.”

Miley Cyrus – ‘Malibu’

Miley Cyrus comes back with a soothing, new introspective track that reflects on the rollercoaster of her relationship with Liam Hemsworth. Miley says she wrote this track on the way to The Voice in the back of an Uber where she had to hold back from singing because someone else was in the car with her. She sings, “Sometimes I feel like I’m drowning and you’re there to save me, and I wanna thank you with all of my heart, It’s a brand new start, a dream come true, in Malibu”. Through this track, she thanks Hemsworth for helping her through an emotional time in her life and being thankful that they have a brand new start after splitting for a few years.

The Charlatans – ‘Plastic Machinery’

Lead track from the Charlatans new record ‘Different Days’ (out this week), ‘Plastic Machinery’ sees the legendary band back on top form, complete with guitar courtesy of a certain Johnny Marr. The band still retain an indistinguishable groove and pop-nous to their music, accompanied by the sweet vocals of frontman Tim Burgess, but now with a new sense of vigour that makes them even more of a national treasure. This is easily up there with the band’s best work since 1997’s ‘Tellin’ Stories’.

Grymm – ‘Gravity’

Brighton trio Grymm has released their post-rock, indie and grunge fused track ‘Gravity’. The dark and somber tracks talks about people making you feel worthless and how they can have a negative impact that changes you as a person. Very grunge.

Mike Will Made-It Ft Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane & Rae Sremmurd – ‘Perfect Pint’

Directed by Nabil, Mike Will Made-it gives us the official video for ‘Perfect Pint’ taken from his recently released album ‘Ransom 2’. The sci-fi inspired visual has Gucci’s head as a flying spaceship, Kendrick in a flying car, giant women on kangaroos, giant pills falling and Mike with Rae Srummurd tripping out at what’s going on around them… definitely worth a watch.
