We’re off to Roskilde – North Europe’s Biggest Festival

Spindle will be venturing to Roskilde Festival in Denmark in a few weeks to check out their version of Glastonbury. We’ve heard good things about the festival that started in 1971 in the small town of Roskilde about 35 km outside of Copenhagen. We’re especially excited about the naked race that takes place the day we arrive…

Over the years the festival has accrued an impressive line-up of legendary performances from artists including: Bob Marley, Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Prince and Nirvana.

But, we’ve also heard it’s not about who’s headlining, but about the cosmopolitan European crowd, the communities that are built within the camp sites, and the massive amounts of bacon that are consumed. We’re hoping the festival has taken a few cues from Christiania, the hippie enclave in central Copenhagen which exists as a lawless(ish) commune. Maybe Christiania is the reason why the Danes are officially the happiest people on earth, especially if they’ve ventured down Pusher Street.

We’ll be reporting back on the likes of The XX, Nas, Ice Cube, Royal Blood, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 feat. Yasiin Bey, Lorde, Nicolas Jarr, Bonobo, Fatima Yahama, Moderat / Mode Selektor, Trentmoller, Bicep, Kink, Rag’N’Bone Man, Warpaint and Noname. But for now Roskilde in numbers – 130,000 party people, 175 acts, 100% non-profit, 9 stages, 8 days and £0 – bank balance on our return as Denmark is bloody expensive!!!.
