Road Trip with London singer-songwriter Ellie Rose

Wednesday 26 July 2017

We’re joined by London-bred pop-songstress Ellie Rose, for the debut feature of Road Trip.

Ellie Rose

So, Ellie. Picture this… You’re off to tour America tomorrow, planned to gig your way along Route 66. Problem is, there’s no aux cable. The touring van has out-hipstered you and only has a cassette player. You have a lot of gear and a few roadies with you, which means unfortunately you only have space for one single tape. Shame.

The tape holds 20 songs.

Get picking.

1. Talking Heads – Road To Nowhere

Because no road trip is complete without it.

2. Fleetwood Mac – Dreams

I know I can’t be Stevie Nicks but for 4 minutes 18 seconds I can pretend.

3. Father John Mistry – Real Love Baby

Bringing the good vibes.

4. The Turtles – Elenore

So I can pretend it was written about me and swoon.

5. David Bowie – Moonage Daydream

Beautiful story telling from Bowie is always essential.

6. Eminem – The Real Slim Shady

I challenge you to find someone who wouldn’t appreciate this on a playlist.

7. The Beach Boys – Darlin’

It’s my fathers favourite song and reminds me of car journeys with my family as a child.

8. Lykke Li – I’m Good, I’m Gone

I’m usually on tour with boys and this brings out the sassy woman in me.

9. The Cure –  The Lovecats

This is one of those songs for me that is purely nostalgic when I listen to it, and the production is golden.

10. Van Morrison – Brown Eyed Girl

Another song I can pretend is about me, and sit in the car swooning over Van.

11. Sheryl Crow – All I Wanna Do

This reminds me of summers I’ve spent in Los Angeles. Such a feel good track.

12. The Beatles – Girl

I feel like I’ll get shit for choosing this Beatles song over any other one for my tape, but I love is so much, the recording of John’s voice gets me every time, so there.

13. The Kinks – Waterloo Sunset

To remind me of home, one of the greatest songs ever written.

14. Cat Stevens – The First Cut Is The Deepest

Because you never know when heartbreak is gonna hit.

15. Chuck Berry – Route 66

Self explanatory no?

16. Buddy Holly – Everyday

Never fails to make me smile.

17. Marvin Gaye – I Heard It Through The Grapevine

This sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it without fail.

18. Dr. John – I Walk On Guilded Splinters

This is a work of art. So. Fucking. Groovy.

19. Joni Mitchell – Big Yellow Taxi

I find this so inspiring, much needed for a tour. Writing on the road and that.

20. The Rolling Stones – Beast Of Burden

To make me feel like a pretty pretty pretty pretty girl.

Somebody get us a copy of that tape! Nice choices, Ellie.
