Spindle Selects: Tracks of the Week

Friday 25 August 2017

Check out what we’ve been listening to at Spindle HQ all week.

Odette – ‘Watch Me Read You’

In ‘new artists to definitely keep an eye on’ news, enter Odette, the 19-year-old Australia-based singer songwriter casting a spell with debut single ‘Watch Me Read You’. The syncopated spoken word versus are hypnotizing in their own right; showcasing a beautiful flow and magnetically powerful delivery, but then enters that beautiful chorus and we’re completely sold. There’s something about this that feels super exciting and fresh, reminiscent of when a young Lorde appeared with ‘Royals’. Signed to EMI Music Australia, we predict big things to come…

BloodPop® & Justin Bieber – ‘Friends’

A new Justin Bieber track always inspires pop hysteria, but the flurry of ‘everything you need to know about BloodPop’ articles caused by the appearance of new track ‘Friends’ has been heartening to see. It’s about time the producer/songwriter/musician Michael Tucker got some widespread recognition; his previous releases under Blood Diamond have always been golden, but the same goes for everything he touches as a producer – ranging from bangers with Grimes and HAIM to Madonna and Lady Gaga. An ode to staying friends with your ex (is it ever possible?!), the track is another hit for Bieber and hopefully the start of a glistening solo career for BloodPop.

IDER – ‘Learn To Let Go’

North London duo IDER are back with ‘Learn To Let Go’, their first release since signing to Glassnote Records. It’s an understatedly euphoric affair from the duo, aka Megan Marwick and Lily Somerville, with their trademark gorgeous harmonies laid over swirling guitar riffs and minimal electro pop. “‘Learn To Let Go’ is about self-acceptance. Finding inner confidence and freedom,” say the pair. “”I spin in my yellow dress”, a lyric which came from nowhere in particular, has come to symbolise the meaning of the song. Yellow universally represents courage, happiness and self-love.” Lovely.

Ariana and the Rose – ‘How Does That Make You Feel’

Spindle favourite Ariana and the Rose has promised us more new music before the year is out, but before then she’s just unleashed the magical video to EP track ‘How Does That Make You Feel’. Directed by Ariana herself, the visuals showcase the evolution of Ariana’s art and exudes an ebullient cool with dance floor wonder. Ariana says; “I wanted to write something that flipped the story a bit and gave a woman’s perspective on being in control and sensual at the same time”.  Ariana will play London’s Underbelly on August 24th.

Logic ‘1-800-273-8255’ Ft Alessia Cara and Khalid

Late last week, US rapper Logic dropped a compelling video for his poignant track ‘1-800-273-8255’. Directed by Andy Hines, the video follows a young guy figuring out his sexuality and finding it hard to find acceptance from his father (played by Don Cheadle) and his peers. The track name derives from the US National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Definitely worth a watch.

Bibi Bourelly ‘Sunshine’

Taken from her new EP titled ’Boy (In Studio)’, the uber talented singer-songwriter Bibi Bourelly also accompanied the release with a intimate acoustic 4 part visual. Looking forward to hearing more from the stunning vocalist.

Charlie Sloth ‘Wake Up’ Ft Giggs

UK DJ Charlie Sloth released his debut album ‘The Plug’ which includes this BIG track with Giggs. Sloth enlisted an impressive group of UK and US artist features that also includes the likes of Abra Cadabra, Donae’o, Stormzy, 21 Savage, Jadakiss, WSTRN, Wolfie and many more.
