Geremy Jasper‘s ‘Patti Cake$’ is a coming-of- age story straight out of New Jersey, in which an an unlikely rapper finds her voice as a one-of-a-kind, hip-hop legend in the making as Patti Cake$. Set in gritty strip-mall suburbia, ‘Patti Cake$’ chronicles an underdog’s quest for fame and glory with humour, raw energy and some unforgettable beats.

Patricia Dombrowski, a.k.a. Patti Cake$, a.k.a. Killa P. (Danielle Macdonald), has had it with life in her rundown New Jersey hometown. At 23, she is motivated by her idol, rap god O-Z and decides to make her dream a reality. However, plain and plus-sized Patti is stuck at home with her wheelchair-bound grandmother (Cathy Moriarty) and bitter, boozy mother (Bridget Everett). With the help of her best friend Jheri (Siddharth Dhananjay), mysterious musician Basterd (Mamoudou Athie) and her loving Nana, she leads a charge against the army of haters, unpaid bills and broken dreams that are holding her back.

Despite previously co-directing VMA-nominated videos for Florence + The Machine and Selena Gomez, ‘Patti Cake$’ is the first feature film from director Geremy Jasper, who also wrote all the music for the film. Jasper claims he worked on the film for 5 years prior to its release and puts its success down to working with like-minded people, one of these being Bridget Everett who plays Patti’s mother. Everett has headlined her own major multi-city US tour, and has taken comedy festivals all over the world by storm including The Oddball Comedy Festival. She also starred in films such as ‘Sex and the City’, ‘Girls’ and the hit Netflix show, “Lady Dynamite”.

‘Patti Cake$’ showcases the raw emotions experienced by a young female trying to make it in the rap game and will tug at your heart strings. Yet Jasper’s dedication to including witty humour amongst elements of documentary-style filming creates elements of light relief in the film. It is this contrast that makes ‘Patti Cake$’ such engaging viewing and will leave you rooting for Killa P to fulfil her dream and become the latest rap god.
