London-based popstar Loop is fast building a name for herself as a creator of catchy, dancefloor-worthy pop numbers. Her debut EP Call Me Loop has drawn the attention of Radio 1’s MistaJam and BBC Introducing, not to mention Sir Elton John, who hand-picked fan favourite ‘As If‘ for his BEATS1 show. Now that she’s fresh from supporting Jonas Blue on his headline EU tour, Spindle took the opportunity to chat to the star about the EP and her musical inspirations.

We’re loving ‘Know Me Better’ here at Spindle HQ! Where did the inspiration for the song come from?

It’s about getting into a new relationship and realising pretty quickly that it isn’t right for you, despite you desperately wanting it to be. And having the strength to call it quits before it gets too far down the line and really fucks with you. I actually wrote it about a professional relationship, but I think it speaks to most people on a romantic level.

That’s so interesting! What’s your song-writing process like? Is there anywhere you find particularly inspiring to write?

It depends! If I’m going through something then I’ll often go into a studio session with some lines already written and a pretty obvious mood/ concept in mind – and if that’s the case I’ve often written those lines in my bedroom or on public transport! But more often than not I’ll just start from scratch with the producer and see where the vibe takes me.

Your single ‘As If’ has been called ‘90s-inspired’. Who or what are some of your 90s inspirations, musically and visually?

Oh my goddd I love the 90s. I am like the archetypal 90s baby. Christina Aguilera was my number 1. But then I also loved Britney, obviously, the Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child, All Saints, N*Sync, etc. etc. Both musically and visually for all of them. I think the two go hand in hand really. I used to watch their music videos for hours on end and try and dress like them and sing like them (well, not so much the boybands – I appreciated their visuals on a different level!)

Just lying here waiting for my next single to come out like…. #SOONCOME . . . . . #gucci #superhero #superheromag #chill #extra #margate #cow #tropical #zebra #music #love #me #newmusic #newmusicfriday

You spent 2016 playing shows across London and you supported Jonas Blue on his tour earlier this year. What’s your favourite song to perform live and why?

I did! That was awesome, I love playing live. I think ‘As If’ is probably my fave to sing live at the moment. We kick off the set with it and it just gets the crowd’s attention immediately. It’s just a fun, empowering song and it’s great to dance to.

What’s been your career highlight of 2017 so far and what are your goals for the next few months?

That’s a tough question… releasing ‘As If’ was a highlight cos the response to it was just so mad – so far beyond my expectations. And then the Jonas tour was sick cos it was my first time playing outside of the UK. And I just played Sundown Festival last weekend on the main stage and that was pretty special cos it was my first main stage experience! So those three I’d say. 2017 has just been a really amazing year and I cannot wait for whatever’s coming next.
