Sitting in the playlist curation seat this week is singer-songwriter Nick Wilson, for the second edition of Road Trip.

Nick Wilson 2

So, Nick. Picture this… you’re off to tour America tomorrow, planned to gig your way along Route 66. Problem is, there’s no aux cable. The touring van has out-hipstered you and only has a cassette player. You have a lot of gear and a few roadies with you, which means unfortunately you only have space for one single tape. Shame.

The tape holds 20 songs.

Get picking.

  1. Natalie Imbruglia – Torn
Because let’s be honest, if you don’t love this song then you’re dead to me.
  2. John Mayer – Wheel
One of the best contemplative songs in my opinion. You want it for those late starry-night-existential-crisis moments.
  3. Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In The Dark
I feel like no American road trip could ever be complete without some Springsteen.
  4. Jeff Buckley – Lover, You Should’ve Come Over
For when you really need to test that vocal range
  5. Muse – Showbiz
Also for when you really need to test that vocal range
  6. The Wombats – Moving To New York
This one just sends me right back to my teenage years. A bit of british indie-pop to remind me of home.
  7. Counting Crows – Colorblind
I wish I could write lyrics as good as these
  8. Shania Twain – That Don’t Impress Me Much
Because I am rocket scientist Brad Pitt
  9. Bruno Major – Home
In the past year I’ve learnt I can’t go a week without listening to this song.
  10. Bon Iver – Re:stacks
I would include this whole album if it didn’t take up 9 of the tracks. This is the best from it. I think.
  11. The Fray – Hundred
To remind how much I wish I played piano. Also it’s absolutely gorgeous.
  12. John Mayer – Edge of Desire
More John Mayer because yes to riffs
  13. Abel Korzeniowski – Table for Two
You need at least one film soundtrack piece, and this is the most beautiful i’ve heard in a while.
  14. Coldplay – Warning Sign
For that sweet tonal shift at 4:02
  15. Vertical Horizon – You’re a God
Because it was in that one montage bit in Bruce Almighty and I want my life to be that one montage bit in Bruce Almighty
  16. Noah Gundersen – Liberator
    Probably my favourite song
  17. Chris Stapleton – I Was Wrong
That vocal. holy SHIT that vocal.
  18. David Bowie – Heroes
For whenever we drive through tunnels/out of tunnels
  19. Mariah Carey – Honey
    I miss old school Mariah
  20. Childish Gambino – Fire Fly
I know all the lyrics. yeah. i’m so cool.

Now that is some mixtape! Ace choices, Nick. A+.
