Today, Spindle get the first spin of one of the tracks from the EP: a cover of the Carole King/ Gerry Goffin song ‘Take a Giant Step’. Originally recorded by The Monkees in 1966 and famously covered by Deva’s father, Taj, in 1969, the laid-back track exposes Deva’s soul bones. It’s both classic and contemporary – a track to keep on repeat over a sunny autumn weekend. We can’t get enough of it.
Of the track, Deva herself said ‘I totally believe in following the flow of energy and it lead me to singing this track for my father’s 70th birthday and then later meeting Carole King while waiting on her table. Magic!!! My father covered “Take a Giant Step” in 1969 and this year it was his 75th Birthday so to honour him, I chose this track as my only cover for my album.‘
Check out the exclusive premiere of the track below, and watch out for it on Deva’s album Run Deep, set for release in 2018. With a producer credit going to Scott Jacoby, who’s worked with the likes of Vampire Weekend, José James, and Coldplay, we’re expecting big things from this one.
