Singer-songwriter Tom Speight has not had an easy ride. Having caught a glimpse of stardom back in 2014 when he worked with the likes of Mumford & Sons and Travis, Speight was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and forced to undergo emergency surgery and a two-year hiatus. However, Speight returned at the end of 2016 to prove that his talent for producing moving singer-songwriter tracks with a folk depth has not been diminished by his years off. His 2017 EPs ‘Willow Tree’ and ‘My My My’ have done just that, and now Tom is back with another EP, ‘Waiting’, to be released on 8th December 2017, and we are premiering the title track right here on Spindle.
Of ‘Waiting’, Tom says that ‘I’ve wanted to record a song like ‘Waiting’ for a long time. I feel like it captures elements of some of my favourite indie bands like The Shins, The War on Drugs, and Grizzly Bear.
‘It was written around the time I decided I wanted to leave Liverpool. I had lived there for about 6 years and definitely needed to move and start fresh. It was an exciting period of finding my feet in London that resulted in a lot of new songs.
‘My main goal when it came to recording this song was capturing the energy it has when we play it live. I recorded it with Chris Bond in Devon in the same session we did “My My My,” [and] it was the first time I’ve used synths and a full band in from the top. I feel like it’s definitely a progression in my sound and [a] step in the right direction.’
