Fashion News Round-Up: RiRi Guest-Edits at Vogue Paris, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Misses the Mark, and Miley Teases a Converse Collab

We’re overdue for another fashion round-up, and this week’s is a belter – read on below!

Rihanna edits Vogue Paris December issue

Rihanna continues to rule the world this week as she unveils her three separate cover shoots for Vogue Paris as part of her guest-editorship of their December issue. The issue, available in stores on 1st December, will cap off a landmark year for the music icon – she’s not only been announced as the host of next year’s Met Gala alongside Anna Wintour, Amal Clooney, and Donatella Versace, but her sold-out makeup line Fenty Beauty was also listed as one of Time’s top inventions of 2017. The three covers see her sporting a series of diverse looks, carrying off each one with her characteristic daring. Each was shot by a different photographer: one by Juergen Teller, one by Inez & Vinoodh, and one by Jean-Paul Goude. Personally, we love the second – check it out for yourself below.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show ruffles feathers yet again

The annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show took place in Shanghai this week, as regulation hotties including Karlie Kloss and Taylor Hill took to the runway in oversize wings and luxury lingerie to parade their gleaming bodies for the cameras. The show included performances by Miguel and Harry Styles, but it was the accessories during the ‘Nomadic Adventure’ segment that hit a sour note with audiences. Featuring headdresses and other garments whose design was evocative of Native American culture and generic ‘tribal’ themes, outlets such as Teen Vogue have pointed out the show’s cultural appropriation.

It’s not the first time that showrunners have faced criticism on this score, as the 2012 show saw Karlie Kloss walk the runway in a Native American-inspired headdress. The 2017 show has been plagued with issues almost from the start, as a slew of models slated to walk, including Gigi Hadid, had to cancel their appearances – in the case of Hadid, it has been speculated that she was denied a visa to China because of past racially insensitive behaviour on social media. Katy Perry, who was scheduled to perform, was also forced to cancel for similar reasons. VS, we’d take this as a sign that it’s time for some introspection – let’s hope that next year we see more sensitivity from the brand.

Forbes have released their list of the world’s highest-paid models

This week has also seen Gisele Bündchen topple from her perch atop the Forbes list of the highest-earning models in the world for the first time since 2002. The young upstart that’s displaced her? None other than Kendall Jenner, who earned $22 million last year through contracts with major fashion and sports brands as well as her own Kendall + Kylie clothing line, appearances on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and social endorsements to her 85 million Instagram followers. It’s another feather in the cap for world heavyweight momaging champ Kris Jenner (just thinking about the combined earnings of her celebrity brood makes us feel like we need a lie down).

Following Kendall on the list are Bündchen, coming in at number two with $17.5 million earned, and Chrissy Teigen at number three with $13.5 million. The Hadid sisters appeared in the list together for the first time this year, and Ashley Graham comes in hot at number 10 as its only full-figured model. Combined, these 10 top earners reportedly brought in an eye-watering $109.5 million (before taxes) between June 2016 and June 2017 – keep at it, I guess, ladies!

Miley Cyrus teases a Converse collab with glitter galore

Last Friday, polarising pop star Miley Cyrus teased an upcoming collaboration with footwear retailer Converse on Instagram. In her posts, Cyrus showed four different samples, three of them featuring glittery soles and including one explicitly unisex design. She promised in one caption that this is ‘just the 1st round of samples’ – evidently we are in for more in the coming weeks and months. Our personal faves are the baby pink flatforms with the silver glitter soles and laces, shown below, but you can check out all the samples so far for yourself on Cyrus’s Instagram.

That’s it from us for this week! Until next time – stay stylish, friends.
