I think gold came out of that moment where you finally start to let go of whatever is on your mind. Those first breaths you take when you realise it’s not the end of the world.
You’ve worked before under different names and had different sounds and said that these have all been part of your journey as a musician, what have you learnt from that?
Honestly i think if i’ve learnt one thing looking back on all the ‘to and fro’ing i’ve done it’s what i really love as a both a writer and a listener of what i make. i can make songs that sound cool, or groove well, or that are epic, or moving but no matter how emotional it might sound, its hollow if i don’t believe in it. I am still trying to figure out the right words for what i mean by that. It just has to mean something to me. Doesn’t have to be significant or deep or poignant or whatever; but it has got to be me. I hope that makes even a little bit of sense.
What’s your favourite thing about back home in Dublin?
I think i love it so much because it feels like normality – like i can escape all the hectic and crazy aspects of working in music. I come back to Dublin and it’s just me and my family in the house i grew up in, and my friends from before any of this happened, and the places that i’ve seen a billion times.
You started out in music playing the violin when you were younger, so do you ever think that you’d incorporate that into your sound now?
I think it definitely is a part of my sound. I don’t think i’m good enough to play it live or anything though haha. But strings and orchestral elements are definitely a deep rooted part of the way that i write, i think. Being in orchestras taught me a lot about chord movements and voicing – so even if it’s not an orchestra playing them, its influence is still there.
2018 looks like it’s gonna be a big year for you with your Vertigo tour, any music New Years resolutions?
Make more of it. Create things knowing not everything has to be of consequence. Allow yourself to work with others. I guess we’ll see how i do.
You’ve gained a following through your different projects and touring the world and I’ve heard Lorde is a pretty big fan! That must be amazing?
It’s actually so amazing that i thought it was fake at first haha. It was a really nice reminder that all of this is real and doesn’t just exist in this weird ‘in between’ on the internet. Similarly touring brings things down to earth for sure. Those are real faces looking back at me. Its surreal.
You work under the name Eden and previously as The Eden Project, what’s your favourite type of flower and why?
I actually have never even thought about that haha this is kind if a non answer but i really love trees. There’s a pine forest i always take walks through when back in Dublin, i just find it really soothing. Not sure why but trees have a way of making me feel small in a good way. Like stars do i guess. So yeah my favourite flower is trees. Sorry.
