After finishing touring with Tom Grennan, now the amazingly talented and soulful Lilly Moore is getting ready for her European tour with Vance Joy. Moore releases her new EP this Spring, working with producers Fred Cox and Jim Abbis, which she claims lets her fans witness honest accounts of her life. We sat down with Lilly for a catch up about how she is making her music dream a reality…
How did you first get into music?
I grew up around music and it is the biggest aspect of my life so I don’t think I’ve ever not been into it!
Who are some of your musical inspirations?
I love Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Irma thomas, Otis Redding, Stevie Nicks, Lauryn Hill, Tobias Jesso Jr. I like the way they aren’t afraid to say exactly what they want to say.
The video for your newest release “Not That Special” features a bunch of your friends. How did you decide to do that?
I definitely didn’t want to hire actors to play my friends in my hometown. Having people that know me well around me meant that the video felt less like we were making a video and more like I was just walking round Brighton with my friends. Two of my close friends are talented actors so that was handy!
What did they say when you asked them?
None of us really knew what to expect as this was also my first time filming a music video. They are all really supportive of me so were happy to be involved. There were a couple of moments when we had been on the beach for ages and I was getting cold and tired and wanted to have a whinge but then saw all my friends around me who were also tired and cold and only there for me so that spurred me on!
You’re quite young, but you’ve already been a part of a mostly sold-out tour for Tom Grennan. How was being a part of that tour?
It was my first time ever on tour so I didn’t know how I was going to find it and was nervous before hand but I ended up loving it and everyone on the tour was great. I’m glad my first tour was one I really enjoyed being a part of. Tom has been really supportive and since then has even come to play at my music night More Moore at Mau Man in Notting Hill.
What are you most looking forward to with touring with Vance Joy?
I’ve never been on tour outside the UK before so I’m excited to be playing to audiences all over Europe, I think that will be an experience in itself. Whilst a lot of my friends are travelling at the moment I’m going to visit new places too and get to do something I love doing (singing) along the way. Hopefully I get to do a bit of exploring in my downtime as there are some cities I’ve never been to that we are going to. I’m so grateful to Vance Joy for bringing me on this tour and letting me share his audience with him as I’m getting to play to lots of people who won’t know me yet. I also have a new red top that I’ve been saving to wear for the tour so that will be nice too.
And your debut EP is out this Spring. What was working on that like?
It was amazing I got to work with two great producers (Fred Cox and Jim Abbis) and some super talented musicians. I loved seeing the songs that I’d written come alive.
What should fans expect from the release?
An honest account of my life so far and what I’ve experienced, although the songs are all different I love them all and I hope you do too.
