Spindle Selects: Tracks of the Week

Thursday 07 June 2018

All the best sounds from the last 7 days.

Charli XCX5 In The Morning

‘5 in the Morning’ provides our first solo fix of Charli XCX since Pop 2 back in December, this time delving into the realms of futuristic trap-pop. Although the sizzling sub-driven beat and triplet flow may seem atypical for an artist so explicitly aligned with bubblegum pop, the crystalline vocals land so comfortably within Charli’s unmistakable dripping cool, you can almost hear the smirk.

Joseph Lawrence & The GardenEclipse

The debut single from London duo Joseph Lawrence & The Garden is one of this year’s best. ‘Eclipse’ is bursting with modern soul sounds and you can almost feel the pain in vocalist Joseph’s heartfelt lyrics. JL&TG will play a headline show at The Islington on June 19th and we’re already at the front of the queue eyeing up that setlist knowing full well that big things are on the horizon for these guys.

Alex ClareHope She’ll Be Happier

Alex Clare, the powerhouse behind the unforgettable ‘Too Close’ returns this summer with new track ‘Hope She’ll be Happier‘. The new release leads the announcement of an acoustic album, due out on September 14th 2018, which includes newly recorded tracks from Alex’s previous records. As well as the new album, Alex will be heading out on a UK and European Tour, kicking off in Manchester in November.

Hannah LelandStay

Hanne Leland is a Norwegian born, London based electro-pop singer who has found herself in studios in LA and London with star producers such as Brian West (Sia, Nelly Furtado) and Red Triangle (Little Mix, Charlie Puth) amongst others. Hanne continues to live up to the hype with the release of her new single Stay, which is an emotional yet powerful electro-pop ballad about the intense fear of losing someone – check it out here:

VacancesHearts

Formed in 2015, Vacances, is the brainchild of Danny Lannon (formerly from The Frail), and production and songwriting partner Alex Fitts (The Kickdrums). The duo soon realised they were on to something special with the project and Danny moved from San Francisco to New York last year to focus exclusively on working alongside Alex on their new EP Strangers which is due for release June 22nd. Hearts is an indie electro-pop lover’s dream, with tight lyrics and an undeniably catchy, groove-infused beat and is a perfect introduction.

Sonia SteinChanging Shapes

Shoreditch based Sonia Stein has found her niche in 80’s infused pastel pop with the unabashedly infectious new single ‘Changing Shapes’ and accompanying video. With her debut album set to release later this year, ‘Changing Shapes’ pairs dreamy pulsating synths with Stein’s atmospheric vocal to reflect the transience of our own identities, a reminder that “we see things as we are, not as they are.”

Bülow – SAD AND BORED (feat. Duckwrth)

If you were captivated by Billie Eilish’s ethereal charm, look no further than bülow for your latest infatuation. ‘SAD AND BORED’, an explosive collab with fellow rising star Duckwrth, is the highly anticipated follow-up to previous single ‘Not A Love Song’, which has amassed over 23M streams to date. Oozing with unapologetic cynicism, ‘SAD AND BORED’ marks bülow as a formidable talent and one to watch in the near future.

Billy Lockett – Feels So Good

Newcomer Billy Lockett has revealed the video for his single Feels So Good ahead of his debut show at Shepherds Bush Empire in October. The track builds from reverb-drenched guitar to an epic crescendo of piano and synths, and was produced by Sam Dixon (Jack Savoretti/Adele) and MyRiot (London Grammar). Feels So Good is another perfect example of Billy’s emotive vocals and ear for a hook and is the perfect follow-up to previous single Empty House.

Emma Jensen – Rush

The Norwegian songstress recently released her 80’s inspired bop ‘Rush’, which was produced by herself and Henrik The Artist. Rush is another perfect pop-gem from the self-taught producer which follows her infectious and successful debut single Closer – a track that had rightfully gained her millions of plays online. Jensen is set to release more music this year and we cannot wait!

Naked Elephant – Sun Kissed

Las Vegas band Naked Elephant are back with their brand new single Sun Kissed and it is just what’s needed to kickstart the summer. The rock/pop/dance infused track only gives feel-good, positive vibes and the video follows suit where we follow the band on their next adventure that takes them to Thailand where they get to meet elephants and bathe by beautiful tropical beaches.

Black Milk – Could It Be

Lifted from the Detroit rapper’s latest critically acclaimed album ‘FEVER’. Black Milk’s new visual tells a poignant story about an aspiring artist trying to succeed in the music industry, but at the same time he remembers his friend who sadly passed away, wishing he was still around. Directed by Black Milk and Gerard Victor, Could It Be is an ambitious, life-affirming and stunning visual, check it out here.
