5SOS Cover ‘Killer Queen’ to Benefit Phoenix Mercury Trust

Monday 29 October 2018

5 Seconds of Summer decided to cover Queen’s 1974 international hit, ‘Killer Queen’, in support of a new biopic about the legendary British rock band.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a two-hour film which examines the chronology of the years and events leading up to Queen’s illustrious performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert. Out now in the UK, (November 2nd in the USA), the visual will traverse the valiant journey of lead singer Freddie Mercury, up to and including his AIDS diagnosis.

5 Seconds of Summer will donate all proceeds generated from their ‘Killer Queen’ cover to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a foundation founded by Queen members Roger Taylor, Brian May, and their manager Jim Beach. The MPT has donated more than 15 million dollars in Mercury’s name, and funded more than 700 projects aimed to battle HIV/AIDS in the last 21 years.

According to 5SOS, the guidance that the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen have provided for their band is undeniable: ‘Queen have been such a massive influence on us as a band. Their unique harmonies, the fluidity to their songwriting and how they each used their own musicality to back each other up have always inspired us’.

In a press release, 5 Seconds of Summer stated, ‘We chose to cover, ‘Killer Queen’ because we kept hearing it while writing our third album, Youngblood and were so enamored by the production and their early realization of the minimalist approach to the track. For us, the exploration of individual vocalists in a band is incredibly important and Queen helped us to see the future of how we want to sing, in addition to how we play our instruments. As a pioneer of individuality, Freddie taught us what it means to embrace the idea of truly being yourself and that’s a part of Queen that lives on in their music now, more than ever’.

5SOS shared a tweet on Friday with a quote from Queen manager Jim Beach:
