For the third time in four years, Ed Sheeran has been on top as the UK’s most played artist. Sheeran has stayed within the top 5 most played artists since his debut album was released in 2011.
His 2018 success is especially exciting considering Sheeran didn’t actually release any music during the year. The second most played artist turned out to be Calvin Harris, with Little Mix coming in third. Out of the top ten, nine of the artists are from the UK. The only non-UK artist featured on the list was Pink.
In order to compile this information, data is collected by premises with PPL licenses which includes pubs, and shops in addition to TV and radio stations.
Chief executive of PPL, Peter Leathem spoke about the list saying “Radio, TV, and public performance usage is a significant indicator of the most played music in the country, so PPL is pleased to report a successful 2018 for homegrown UK talent.”
