After moving on from his previous project ‘Count Counsellor,’ there is a lot to look forward to from Joy Anonymous. This new project has been described as “somewhere in the realms of Fat Boy Slim and Basement Jaxx”. There are hints of House, Garage, Disco, and Pop, making this a sound that anyone will be interested in.
The project is complete with high-energy accompanied by visuals from artistic director James Rushton. The live show has graced stages from New York to Mexico, and if you’re lucky will come to a place near you.
We got a chance to chat with Joy Anonymous about everything from his sound, the change from Count Counsellor and more…
What inspired you to make the change from Count Counsellor to Joy Anonymous, and what makes this project different?
I wanted to make something more inclusive and more open to different the incarnations of the music I make with different people. The point is anyone and everyone can be in Joy Anonymous. Count isn’t done just having a sleep for now
What is the story behind the name ‘Joy Anonymous’?
Joy Anonymous came from imagining a Meeting like AA or any anonymous help meetings but instead of having to discuss the problems with yourself you discuss the things that bring you JOY. Big or small it doesn’t matter every little step helps you get to a place you want to be in.
What do you hope people walk away with after seeing a Joy Anonymous show?
Just Feel something whether you hate it or love it 10/10 or 1/10 all the rest doesn’t mean anything. Ideally Joy though.
If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would you want to go?
Albania + Joy = Almania
How would you describe your sound?
Are there any artists you hope to collaborate with?
Random groups around the world like a cor anglais troupe in Tasmania or a Midwife Choir in Iceland but bill them as Joy Anonymous all at the same time.
What are your goals for this new project?
Just a bit sick of people making sad music or music that makes you feel sad about yourself, don’t get me wrong, i’m into David Gray but the world needs Joy right now and I’m gonna try my best to give it to people.
Do you have anything coming up in the future that fans can look forward to?
Joy Anonymous meetings starting in a town near you.
